I really enjoyed this book and read it in a matter of days.

The Author had the set scene really well and I could actually picture where both Joyce and Ruby lived. The environment where Joyce lived reminded me of Stepford Wives and was quite unsettling in the same way as Stepford Wives. It was unsettling because it showed how women were treated and viewed in that era. This ran parellel with how Ruby was treated by society and the challenges she faced as a black woman - this contrast was done very effectively by the Author. I found both Ruby and Joyce very likeable and warmed to both characters and their struggles.

The supporting characters were described really well by the Author and it was easy to picture them too. I found they all had a part to play and all added to the overall story.

I did find myself starting to skim pages during the last 100 pages as the story did not wrap up quickly enough for me - this is the only reason the story was not a 5 * read for me.

This was a very impressive debut novel and I would definitely pick up more from this Author.
