An intriging start to what i'm sure will be a rollicking good read. We meet the mother in the garden on the morning of her disapperence and it is obvious she is rather under the thumb of her husband. Next we meet the downtroden help trying to get to her job on time and then are introduced to the spiteful neighbour who makes the helps work all the more difficult with pithy comments. She makes the help late for her second job at the mother's home. Approaching she finds the elder daughter in the garden and reluctent to go back inside the house.
The baby is crying from upstairs and Ruby, the help, finds her in a soiled nappy and cot. On going downstairs she finds the carnage in the kitchen with Barbara trying to clear up. Cut to the newly deployed police officer assigned to the case who is immediately likeable as being put out by Ruby's arrest. We discover the father is away at a conference and the local ladies have set up search parties.
