I simply loved this book. The two central characters are worlds apart and both of those worlds are expertly drawn. Ruby is a heroine for her time and ours. Issues relating to race and gender are explored thoughtfully through her. Mike is a cop who has seen it all, despite that, his humanity holds strong.

You get a real sense of the lives of those 1950s women in suburbia. Supposedly they had it all, but the veneer is removed in this novel to reveal their empty lives. Some novels of this type can be anachronistic, but not here. The attention to detail is excellent. The beautiful but bland houses, the relentless sunshine is just a façade. Behind it we see women at times desperate for more.

If you loved 'Mad Men' or the novels of Richard Yates, then this is for you. Even if you don't, this is a really engaging read. I look forward to more from this writer.
