The book gives the reader a visit back to an imagined idyllic time in the late 50s. On the surface everything is perfect, halcyon days, who wouldn’t want to live here? Joyce disappears from her life leaving two young girls. This leads to more questions than answers.
However, nothing is as it seems. The two main characters, Mick the detective and Ruby the black maid, are both of their time and also ahead of their time. Their views and attitudes move away from the acceptable norm of the era. The book seeks to deal with many issues that existed, sexism, racism, class, and money. These spilt the both the different communities and the communities themselves.
The plot twists and turns which is great, a mystery needs to keep the reader interested and to move the plot forward. I love books like this, though I prefer a faster paced story. That said, it was an excellent debut novel.
