I liked the premise of this book; a missing persons case set in 1950’s Suburban Calafornia, featuring middle class housewives, their ‘help’ and a recently disgraced detective. The chapters jump between the point of view of these characters which makes it quite a fast paced read and it highlights the different oppressions from society that each character is experiencing.

However, although the author does keep you guessing right up to the end of the book what happened and ‘whodunnit’, I did find the conclusion to be quite a little bit far-fetched and slightly unbelievable. I also felt like I wanted to get to know the back story of some of the characters a bit more, as they all seemed a bit shady and flawed in some way but we didn’t always get the details of this.

Overall, I did enjoy this book. It is a quick easy read as you want to find out what has happened to the victim and it does highlight some of the important issues that would have been prevalent at that time (and still today) such as racism and married life.
