This book certainly lived up to my expectations from the lovely front cover, which really drew me in. Set in the late 1950s in small town America this novel focuses on the disappearance of a young housewife, Joyce, from her home. The disappearance is discovered when her help, Ruby a young black girl arrives to discover two young children along in the house and blood in the kitchen. The novel is told through three main characters and all are extremely well written. There is flashbacks from Joyce covering the day leading up to her disappearance from Joyce, the investigations from the detective, Mick and Ruby. Ruby us drawn into the investigation after being wrongly arrested as a young black girl first on the scene of a crime
The novel also covers the feelings of housewives at the time and how they did not have many choices in life. The rights of black people at the time are also covered and it gives a good insight into the difficulties they often faced.
This novel is very well written and I really enjoyed reading it.
