The setting to this story is an area called Sunnylakes, California in the 1950s. This is a perfect Stepford Wives area where lawns are manicured as are the women who live here. However, things are not as perfect as they may seem.
At some point in the long, long afternoon Joyce Haney, wife and mother vanishes form her home leaving behind her frightened children and a bloodstained kitchen. Why did she leave the children and where has she gone?
We meet Ruby the help or cleaner, who is a lead character in the story. Ruby learns more about the secrets behind the perfect Sunnylakes. The police searching for Joyce are led by Detective Blanke who has recently arrived from the East Coast. Ruby agrees to help Detective Blanke to unravel the mystery in spite of the danger.
This is an excellent mystery, it has several layers including the way in which women and wives of 1950s America were expected to behave. It is well written and has more twists and turns and dead ends than a maze.
