I knew I had to read this after seeing "mad men/ desperate housewives" vibes on a review and it certainly didn't disappoint.
the setting is 1950's America and a suburb of Santa Monica which is largely populated by the white middle class. A time of huge political change in America with women's rights and race are still dominating politics which makes for a good mix of main characters. It's told from three POV, Ruby who is the coloured help, the detective leading the case and also the missing person Joyce.
The writing is superb and once you start reading you get absorbed into the setting which is very atmospheric and chilling.
The plot isn't particularly racy or a page turner but the socio politics of the era brings such depth to the story that it makes it a compelling read which you cant put down.
This would make a great Tv series I think .
thank you to Readers First for my copy.
