In the summer of 1959 on a sleepy suburban street in Sunnylakes, California all hell breaks loose and lives are changed forever.
When Ruby Wright turns up for her job as a cleaner for the Haneys' she finds the children on their own and a kitchen filled with blood and no sign of Joyce their mother.
So starts the race to try and find Joyce whom they fear abducted or murdered.
But behind closed doors things aren't always what they seem and does Ruby somehow hold the key to the puzzle and if so is she too in danger?
This was absolutely brilliant, the time period, the sleazy secrets, the kind of "pulp detective" tone to the novel and a wonderfully, engaging storyline that keeps you guessing all rolled up with social issues that resonate today.
Kind of a version of "The help" meets a Christie novel.
Definitely one for the period and mystery thriller fans.
