The story is set in 1959 and the descriptives bring that time alive, the colours are portrayed as vivid as are the fashions. The story starts with a missing woman whose children are found by the arrival of 'the help', who in this case is Ruby, a young negro woman, who after seeking help when she finds blood in the kitchen is immediately arrested. The detective who arrives at the scene is fresh from New York (the story is set in California) and questions why she was arrested. We then see the story from several points of view, most are after the disappearance of Joyce Haney, but the ones from before are Joyce's. This gives the reader some insight into her state of mind. Her husband has her potrayed with mental issues but loves her all the same. We see the fabric of the illusion of perfect life in the LA Hills pulled apart and taken down to it's bare bones, all the secrets and lies are on view.
I really enjoyed this book and was sad to finish it. I really hope there are more from this author.
