The Long, Long Afternoon by Inga Vesper has been all my too be read pile for a very long time! I had received this book free in return for an honest review and it never appealed to me, like the all other books on my shelves, waiting to be read. However, after a thumbs up from my sister I delved in. To be honest, I hate the title and the book cover, this is not a book I would have bought. However, after reading the book, I now understand the cover, but still hate the title! This was Inga Vesper's debut novel and I did enjoy it. The book is set in the summer of 1959 in California and centres around the disappearance of one of the housewives' who live in exclusive Sunnylakes. However, this is not just a book about Joyce Haney vanishing without a trace, leaving two small children and a blood stain on the kitchen floor. This is also about Ruby Wright the black help and how her life is also full of fear and despair. The Long, Long Afternoon highlights the racial tensions and prejudice that existed in 1950's America, but ultimately this is a story about women.
