Set in 1959 the book opens on a hot and sticky afternoon in the Californian suburbs.
The main character, Joyce, appears to have the perfect life, husband, two adorable little girls, the fabulous house in a beautiful setting. However, we meet Joyce gazing through her perfect windows, deep in reflection and planning her escape.
Bored middle class wife, befriends black working class cleaner, Ruby.
Secrets and lies in suburbia, this is a well paced and evocative read, Inga captures the spirit of the times really well.
With its twists and turns, The Long Long Afternoon is a real page turner. Inga has created strong and credible characters who each have their own flaws and backstory. I was particularly taken with Ruby, rooting for her from chapter one, she becomes so fundamental to the telling and hearing of Joyce’s story.
Loved the cover, I thought it captured the ethos of the book really well.
