'The long, long afternoon' was in fact the first novel of this genre that I have actually read. And what a great debut novel it was too; both for me and its author, Inga Vesper!

I loved the way that each chapter offered up another clue or another secret. And I loved the way in which the characters' viewpoints revealed alternative theories and different points of view along the way too. The text was really well written throughout to keep both the suspense and my guessing going. Like Detective Blanke, I considered the evidence and added up 2 + 2 to make 5! It wasn't until nearing the end of the book that everything eventually fell into place.

I also appreciated the author's insightful writing that portrayed the appalling racial inequalities of the time. So to have Ruby turn out to be the real hero was just perfect.

I can already see this novel being successfully captured on the small screen.
