The cover of Inga Vesper’s ‘A Long, Long Afternoon’ first caught my attention. On first glance it looks the normal, idyllic kitchen of a 1950’s housewife. However on closer inspection, not all is as it seems. A knife, a cracked plate, a pool of blood....
I can tell you that on starting reading kA Long, Long Afternoon’, it quickly turned into a long long evening for me as I couldn’t put this down.
From the first pages I was hooked, housewife Joyce Haney has vanished from her home leaving two young scared, crying children alone. Ruby, the cleaner, fortunately arrives but immediately senses something is amiss. On seeing blood she calls the police but is at first arrested herself for no other reason than being a black woman at the scene of a crime.
Soon detective Mick is invested in the case but with secrets, lies and plenty of affairs going on in Sunnylakes he will need Ruby’s help as the only one who gets to see a glimpse into the lives of these not so innocent housewives.
