Inga Vespers first novel did not disappoint. ‘It’s summer 1959 and the well-trimmed lawns of Sunnylakes, California, wilt under the sun’. Joyce Haney vanishes leaving her two children behind.
Sun, secrets and a seemingly perfect community all wrapped up in this perfect historical fiction mystery. Reading this setting during the cold winter was warming.
I did not put this down until I had finished it all in one sitting. Slower in the first half than second this multi perspective story took us on this unusual mystery.
This book also handles social, political and racial issues that I believe are so important to read. I loved the character of Ruby and I felt the chapters of Joyce showed some understanding of mental health. This is Inga’s first novel and I really hope it is not her last. I really recommend reading this book and I will look out for more from this author.
