The Long, Long Afternoon is a fast past and extremely gripping page turner that I could not put down! The story is about the disappearance of a Housewife called Joyce and the mystery of what might have happened to her. There are lots of exciting twists and turns, and many complex characters. There is also a strong focus on racism, feminism and inequality and how extreme it was in the 1950s.
One of the main characters, Ruby, is the hired help for Joyce who is missing, and she works with Detective Mick Blanke to try and solve the case. But it seems that everybody has dark secrets to hide, and with Ruby being a Black woman she faces many other struggles as well and while she wants justice for Joyce, she also doesn't want to put herself in danger.
I loved this book so much and a lot more than I expected. I kept thinking that I had figured out the mystery and then more details would be uncovered to make myself doubt everything, and I was routing for Ruby the whole way through. I will definitely buy any other books that Inga Vesper writes in future.
