Genuinely interested in reading more of this, the characters were set up well in such a short extract and I was invested in what was happening. Especially intrigued as to what is going to happen with Ruby. Impressive amount of context is given to each of the characters by the author, who does a good job at showing who these characters are rather than telling us. I think the time period is effective and lends itself well to this type of book, has the potential to be quite Noir.
Would have loved a longer first chapter to set the scene with the mother rather than just a handful of pages, just so that she wasn't quite so forgettable and we had more of a memory of her going forward. This might happen later on but I felt it would've been better situated at the beginning. Regardless, it was an interesting and easy read that I hope to be able to finish sometime soon.
