Thank you to @readersfirst for the free copy of this book! The Long, Long Afternoon was a delight of a read and I was by far most impressed with Vesper’s ability to evoke and convey the atmospheric setting of the fifties. The time period is crucial to the story and suited it well; I loved the characters and how they interacted in this environment, particularly Ruby and naturally the struggles she faced as a Black woman during the story. Ultimately this is a tale of feminism and a very unsettling, poignant one at that. Each woman the reader meets has her own struggles and I enjoyed the multiple perspectives given - initially I was reminded quite strongly of Gone Girl! I thought this was an amazing read and a strong recommend, my only complaint being that the ending was a little weak when placed in direct comparison to the rest of the book. All the same, an incredible debut novel.
