‘The Long, Long Afternoon’ is set in 1950’s Santa Monica. It deals with the the disappearance of Joyce, a mother, whose blood was found in a kitchen.

The author deals with the racism associated with the time period, as Ruby, the black maid, is arrested by the first policeman to attend the scene.

I am drawn to books with multiple narratives and I really loved the alternating points of view - it is told from that of Mick (a detective), Joyce and Ruby.

The depiction of the racism towards Ruby is emotive and uncomfortable and shows how powerless and vulnerable she is. The white patriarchal dominance is prominent and the need to dominate women, shows the depths that men will do to, including Joyce’s husband.

This ugliness of racism, oppression and societal demands and expectations are juxtaposed with the big beautiful houses with perfectly landscaped lawns, in an attempt to hide truths.

Overall, a mesmerising piece of writing with mystery and intrigue a plenty. It’s definitely worth a read.
