When I read the sample for this book I thought it would be an interesting mystery about a housewife who had gone missing. That on it`s own made me want to read the story. However, I was wrong because the missing housewife was the main subject of the story but there was so much more to it than just that.
The story takes place in a sunny part of America in 1959 where the families living in certain areas appeared to be really living the dream. They were mostly wealthy couples with lovely homes and beautiful children. Joyce was one of these `lucky' women who seemed to have everything, but one day she seemed to just disappear leaving two children behind and a puddle of blood in the kitchen.
This scene was found by Ruby who was the `help' in the house on certain afternoons each week. Ruby had a completely different life to Joyce because she had dark skin and she came from a poor area. She did cleaning jobs for Joyce and her friend Nancy ,who was a neighbour, for the money to fund her education. But when Ruby was found at the scene of the crime she was immediately arrested as a suspect.
This story is a work of historical fiction which covers some very taboo subjects such as racism , unhappy marriages, unfairness and women`s roles in society.
