Such a descriptive story that truly transported me somewhere else. From the first page I found myself immersed in the time and place. Vespa has done such a good job in creating such vivid imagery throughout. The characters became images in my brain in a way that makes the whole reading experience so much more engaging.

We meet the Haney household as their help arrives to find the two children alone and their mother Joyce missing. The discovery of blood in the kitchen and a phone to the police and the house becomes a crime scene and the help immediately arrested. The whole book reveals all the secrets of the people in Sunnylakes, a upper class community.

Their is a running undertone of racial injustice which is handled so incredibly well. The contrast between the Haney's area and Ruby's home is incredible and the surrounding events really set the whole story into place. Such a good read would highly recommend.
