This book is told from the perspectives of Ruby (the help), Mick (the Detective) and Joyce, with the title of the book referring to Joyce's perspective over the course of one afternoon, and the other two perspectives carrying on in time.

I loved this book from the very beginning but when I got to about halfway through, I realised something was missing for me, and I'm still not quite sure what that was. I guessed what had happened so there wasn't really an overall element of surprise, but I usually guess the twists so that doesn't knock down a star rating for me. (There was however one plot point which I won't reveal here but that did shock me).

Importantly this book explores some racial issues from the 1950s very well.

I definitely got 'True Detective' vibes from the setting and there was something very sexy about Joyce. This is also a very pretty book, both the cover and inside.

I would recommend this but I just didn't love it as much as some other banging reads I've read this month
