Brilliant book set in the racially prejudiced 1950’s California. Joyce Haney goes missing just before her ‘help’ Ruby arrives to find 2 young children alone in the house and blood on the kitchen floor.
Ruby has her own dreams and goals in her life and is hesitant at first to help the Detective in charge of the case. The story moves from the privileged suburbs into the world that Ruby lives in and back again. Detective Mick Blanke - himself new to the area - persuades her to keep her eyes and ears open - because as far as her employers are concerned she is invisible. The case is solved by Mick with help from Ruby, despite warnings from her family that no good will come of it.
An intriguing storyline and the author manages to keep the interest of the reader right through to the end.
