A wonderful murder mystery that covers race inequalities and an era, we should all Learn from. Strong female characters challenged by the patriarchy. Nice last minute twist. It was really refreshing to read such a realistic and truthful book. The lead character was so well developed, the writer really captured reality in every word. The late 50’s is so well conveyed, the racism towards Ruby was so accurate.
All the descriptions set a wonderfully clear picture of the places in the book. The green gardens, well manicured and a bit fake. Big houses and ‘dream’ family lives.
Overall this was such a good read- a bit of an education whilst also a gripping read about the 50’s. The long long afternoon is basically a good old fashioned who done it- with lots of extra details to make it a very true to life read. A wonderful literary crime fiction.
