The author experienced the Bosnian war first hand and it shows. This is fiction but it has a real feel of realism. The story starts about a British doctor who has come to Bosnia help a sick child back but who is left to look after herself in this war-torn country. She eventually meets and befriends a Bosnian woman who is trying to escape the brutality of war. There is also an American journalist trying to make up for past mistakes, as well as many other believable local characters from devastated Sarajevo and it is their plight and the pointless destruction that really stick with you from this book.

Like I say, it is fiction but very harrowing and believable, and you realise some of the terrible things here would really have happened. So not an easy read, harrowing at times but gripping. I'd recommend it as both a gripping read but also an eye opener to a recent conflict.
