Beautifully written, a fiction for us..reality for many

As a lover of historical fiction this book instantly appeals to me. The writing style is immersive and successfully paints vivid pictures in the mind. The stark contrast between the island's scenery and serenity and the experiences of war, is highly emotive. I'm left longing to find out more about the island, Fred's summer with Chrissie, their life experiences, and to discover this fictional past which was a reality for many. Reminiscent of Birdsong and the Bronze Horseman trilogy.
