The descriptions in this novel are so evocative that you don't need any imagination to be able to see the locations very clearly. Fred is in a POW camp and the horror of such a place is very clear. I found myself wanting him to survive within the first two pages.
The story then switches to the past and other characters and I wanted to read more to see how their lives were inter connected.
