I wasn't really sure what I thought of this book right at the beginning. The urgency and despair of the war scenes weren't what I expected from the blurb. But once the following chapters showed us St Kilda and set up scenes in the past, I began to get drawn in. The sense of place is already very well developed from this short extract.
