As soon as I saw the cover of The Lost Lights of St Kilda, I thought that this would be my kind of book. I was not disappointed. Elisabeth Gifford's book is beautifully written, and the story grabbed my attention from start to finish. The landscapes are described so beautifully that it felt as though I was reading about places I knew, rather than distant ones I have never even visited.

We learn a little of Chrissie's childhood on the remote island of St Kilda, but the main part of the story begins with the friendship between her, Fred and Archie, when the the two young men visit the island during the 1920s. The story is told by alternating narrators, and flits between the 1920s and the 1940s Scotland and war-torn Europe, but is easy to follow, helped by the dates given at the beginning of each chapter. This is a lovely read, and one which I can thoroughly recommend.
