I absolutely loved this book! The complex relationship between Archie, Chrissie and Fred was gripping all the way through the book. I thought the descriptions of the scenery, particularly of St Kilda were fabulous. I was fascinated by the story, and intrigued, googled it. Very interesting to see that the last survivor was Rachel. Very believable that it could be Rachel Anne and that so many of the names were real people.
There is a fabulous reality to the story. The innocence of the St Kildans, the hardships of their lives - the hunger, the brutal weather, the smell of lamps fuelled by the stomach oil of birds. The hard work spinning and weaving.
It is at times thought provoking, heart breaking and completely entrancing.
I wanted it to carry on. What happened to Callum? How did Chrissie find life after the move to the mainland? (there's a gap here!)
I would highly recommend it to anyone!!
