Such a beautifully written book that tells its story of love and loss and a yearning to find out more about one's roots: set against the backdrop of a terrible world besieged by the atrocities of world war II and its inflicting terror.

The author gently weaves her tale in ways which make you feel engaged with and responsive to each of the believable characters. The plot is compelling and had me hooked from the start. The Isle of St Kilda provides one of the main focal points and mesmerised me so much that I felt compelled to read more about its history and the real-life events of what happened there and why people were evacuated in the 1930s. The other location is occupied France. The book had me believing that I was living through the story, I would certainly recommend.
