This is one of the best books I have read for a while. The cover is beautifully designed. I did not know much about St Kilda at all before reading this so I really enjoyed the description of life on the island. The author really paints a picture of how idyllic it is but also the hardships faced, which made me really feel for the St Kildans when they made the decision to leave their home. I love the writing style going between Fred and Archie's visit to the Island in 1927 to Fred in WW2 and Chrissie and Rachel in 1941. It was really interesting to read about Fred's escape through occupied France and the bravery of all those who helped him. Chrissie is a really strong female character which I love. The ending was perfect. I will definitely look out for other books by Elisabeth Gifford.
