Beautiful writing, just a little too slow-paced

If you're looking for a leisurely paced historical fiction that is set in the Scottish Isles, then this may be a good candidate for you!

1927 - Cambridge student Fred and his friend Archie arrive on the tiny island of St Kilda. Archie falls in love with the rugged windswept beauty of the island and swiftly develops feelings for one of its residents, 19-year-old Chrissie Gillies. The book follows Chrissie, Fred, and Archie over their years on the island and into the Second World War.

I thought that the writing style used in this book was very pretty, and the descriptions of the island were spectacular. The pacing was incredibly slow which, for me, was the downfall of this book. We are treated to an emotion-wrenching introduction that creates an element of anticipation, yet the remainder of the book lacks that same feeling. If the whole book had been written like the final 50 pages, then the story would have been a hit for me, but it sadly was too slow-paced. The characters were all written well and I did particularly enjoy following Fred throughout his storyline.

If you're a historical fiction lover then I would recommend this - I just wish the pacing was a little quicker!

Many thanks to the publisher for providing me with a physical copy of this book in return for an honest review.
