This book is just beautiful. The storytelling is so vivid that the places and people jump off the page.
The story begins with Fred in the war, suffering at the hands of the Germans. We then get returned to the island of st kilda where Freda once spent the summer studying geology. This is where he meets Chrissie

Equally the life of Fred as he escapes the war camp and makes his way, painfully slowly across France and into Spain, until finally he makes it back to Scotland.
Along the way we discover the complex web of love between Chrissie, Fred and Archie and learn were loyalties lie and secrets are uncovered.
