This is, quite simply, a beautiful book.

We have the beauty and harshness of Mother Nature on St. Kilda alongside the brutality of Mankind, mellowed by the kindness of strangers, during World War II.

Both sides of this tale are captivating for very different reasons although I confess that I was more carried away by the life on St. Kilda.

It encapsulated self sufficiency at it’s most demanding.
It showed the affect the outside world had on the lives and emotions of the Islanders. But, ultimately, no-one really helped them, they have to give up their homes.
And yet, during World War II people were helping total strangers to find their way home.

This book informed me, entertained me, carried me away to an island I know is there but shall never visit, and gave me many pauses for thought.

An excellent read.

Thank you to Readers First, Corvus and Elisabeth Gifford for the ARC in return for my honest review.
