This book is a beautiful tale, exquisitely written.

The descriptions of St Kilda’s are so evocative that you cannot fail to be exported there, back to a lost time. The author’s prose makes you consider how far progress has taken us, and what is lost in the process. The story, despite many sad elements, is ultimately one of hope. Despite the hardships that the island dwellers coped with during the winter months, hope was always present and the first signs of spring was a joyful time. This contrasts with the hell that Fred experienced and although he did not know if or when the hell would end, again it was hope that got him through.

The happy ending was not a surprise. The book was not a challenging read but is definitely worth reading for its delightful storytelling and for being very uplifting .
The novel has stirred interested in me to find out more about the history of the island and I am fascinated to learn more, so this novel is now leading onto more reading!
