This started off quite slow but it was one of those novels that turned out to just get better and better as it went on.
The inhabitants of St. Kilda struggle to eke out an existence and as the world descends into war conditions make it all but inhabitable.
Just before the residents remaining decide to leave for the mainland, two men come to study the island who will have a dramatic effect on the life of one girl Chrissie.
Both in their own way love her but the betrayal of one leads them all to split and lead separate lives.
But with the threat of war hanging over their heads they realise that life and love is more important than what went before and throughout the novel we see both these men struggle to find a way back to Chrissie and find a way to right their wrongs.
But will their hearts still love with the intensity of their youth?
