St Kilda is an island or actually it's a group of small islands, it's a hundred miles from the British mainland and its the most remote place in the British Isles far out in the Atlantic. Its windswept location makes it a very harsh place and once there was a community that lived on the islands. The community of islanders that lived there had a hard life, they made tweed and socks during the winter months to sell to the "tourists " in the summer. Their diet was very basic, only what they could scavenge from the island, including the sea birds which made up their food supply.
Fred arrived on the island in 1927 and caught the attention of Chrissie. Going forward to the years of WW2 and Fred is in France trying desperately to return to England after D Day.
As you read on and discover the plight of Chrissie, Fred ( and Archie, the son of the Laird) you find yourself really drawn into this story and also learning so much too about the history of the Highlands of Scotland. You can almost imagine that you are there on the island with the description, it makes it seem so real, you can feel the cold and gales and hear the sounds as you read.
An enchanting love story that spans a few decades but they are linked at the start of each chapter with the date so you know where you are.
I had previously read The Good Doctor of Warsaw also by Elisabeth Gifford and this book is also just as much a captivating read and one you will remember and recommend to all your friends.
