This novel has two intertwined stories. The first is told by Chrissie a young women who is part of the last islanders to live on and then be evacuated from St Kilda to the mainland in 1930.
The second story is told by Fred while in a prisoner of war camp then on the run in France during the second world war.
Chrissie is now living on her own with her daughter born shortly before she left St Kilda. She loved living on St Kilda and her story is very moving. The descriptions of the island make it seem bleak but welcoming at the same time. Her daughter is curious about her unknown father.
Fred is looking back at a perfect summer spent on St Kilda with his best friend whose family owned the island. He fell in love with Chrissie and the island. He uses these memories to help him escape the camp and go on the run. While on the run he meets up with his friend again who helps him escape and tells him some secrets from that special summer.
The novel is well written and perfectly describes both times and places. I really enjoyed both stories and the ending was both sad and heart warming.
