What an absolutely stunning novel. Taking place on an archipelago in the Scottish Outer Hebrides, the story follows the community on St Kilda in the years leading up to it being evacuated. The descriptions about the people, landscapes and history of the island were beautiful and detailed, painting such a vivid picture of island life at that time.
I personally love reading books that use a dual timeline to tell a story, and this was done perfectly, switching between the 1920s and 1940s as the love story unfolds between Fred and Chrissie who meet on the island and even though they fell in love, were unable to stay together.
The thing that stood out to me the most was the descriptions of Fred as a German prisoner of war during the Second World War, and how his memories of Chrissie and their time together on St Kilda are the only things to keep him going. A moving and captivating novel from start to finish.
