I adored this novel. It is a love story but also deals very touchingly with the final years of St Kilda as an inhabited island. Add to thìs the parallel story of efforts of the French resistance in WW2 and the result is a tightly structured tale which remains engrossing until the last page.

St Kilda is beautifully brought back to life through descriptions of the landscape and the characters. How wonderful it would be to visit now. The details of island life are fascinating to read.

What really gives this story its heart is the relationship between Fred, Chrissie and Archie. All spirited and young, their journey is at times sad, at others tense or joyous. Elisabeth Gifford communicates so well the folly of youth. This is the first of her books I've read and I'm eager for more.
I truly loved this.
