This book is beautifully written. It had me drawn in from the moment I started reading. The detail in which the characters are described and the landscape and surroundings, it builds up this beautiful backdrop to a story you'll fall in love with. The historical content is so well done you instantly feel like you are in 1927 when Fred takes his summer job on st Kilda or 1940 when Fred is captured behind enemy lines. You feel like you're there beside him and that's difficult to do. I've never read any more of Elisabeth Gifford work but reading The lost lights of St Kilda has definitely made me want to look into more of her stuff. If you're looking for a beautifully written historical fiction, that is a story of love, grit and determination then check out this story.
