Gosh did I judge this book very quickly. On the title mostly. With its basic - although attractive and intriguing - cover which doesn’t give away a thing, and what sounds like a pretty straight forward blurb. Ok I thought, light chick lit read including the pretty modern topic of ghosting - I know what to expect!

But then there’s the last paragraph on the blurb...

‘What do you do when you finally discover you’re right? That there is a reason - and that reason is the one thing you didn’t share with each other?

The truth.’

And in the sample of the first few chapters offered by Readers First (who also gifted the book, thank you) there was something in the way our main protagonist, Sarah, behaved. Something in her sheer adamant faith in his feelings for her...

The book quite quickly displays my initial thoughts on the situation in the views of one of Sarah’s best friends, Jo. That our Sarah had been ghosted by a man, Eddie, who she had bumped into in an English country lane while visiting her parents in the summer, and had spent an intense and unexpected week with, where they fell in love and promised to meet very soon. But then he fell off the face of the earth.

And then not long after I was hooked. It became so much more than I expected, and basic chick lit it wasn’t. Rosie writes with a natural and flowing style. She creates imagery with minimal wording which results in a speedy and effortless read. Her characters have depth and the side plots along the main story add real substance. She touches upon a dense and complex mixture of emotions and life situations, she explores how experiences affect you and how lives are changed in a matter of seconds but nothing is ever as black and white as it may seem - or more importantly, how you may want it to be.

The twist. The twist floored me. I was about a third of the way through when I decided I’d figured it out. Oh I hadn’t. I’ve read my fair share of books and watched enough films to generally get the gist of a story but this one hit me straight in the face - and heart - and I loved it, I loved that I didn’t see it coming as I’m very rarely surprised. I was surprised and enlightened, and heartbroken. I flicked back to see where I’d missed the clues, to see where the hints were and see how it all now fit together, with my brand new filter on.

A fantastic read which I just couldn’t finish quick enough. Shame I had to go to work today really! I wholeheartedly recommend.
