This book will be an absolute delight to any child who dreams of magical worlds full of mythical creatures, mysterious powers and a sneaky villain who threatens it all!
We follow the main character, Ella Durand, who comes from a family of conjurers, as she is accepted into The Arcanum Training Institute. This is where Marvellers learn to be, well, marvellous. Except conjurers have been widely mistrusted and not allowed to attend the school. Ella is in a position of not only having to prove herself but also the worth of her "tribe".
She finds her a lot of her peers shun her - thankfully she makes two good friends and has a very sympathetic mentor.
Meanwhile there is also a villain lurking in the shadows that wants to ruin it all!
You may think this all sounds very "Harry Potter" but I'd say that Ella's world is much cooler than that and really highlights the idea that difference is OK and that it is our individual talents that make us who we are.
I can't wait to read the next instalment!
