This was fun, and a perfect recommendation if you're looking for an alternative to That Series that shall not be named, I think I just felt a bit confused with the amount of information that was being thrown at me.

Once I got to grips with the world it was easier though, and it's undeniably fantastical and so, so diverse, it's a world I do want to explore more from, so I plan to read the future books.

The main character and her friends are really fun characters that I enjoyed getting to know, and I loved that the main character had a strong family background. I'm hoping this series follows them year by year as they grow up.

This might have been stronger had it just been a little shorter, and spent more time this book setting up the world, rather than concentration on the villain side plot, which would have been saved for a sequel. I think this would hold up really well to a re-read though, now I've got a better grasp of the world.
