In The Marvellers, the first book in the series by Dhonielle Clayton, Ella Durand is the first member of the Conjure community to be admitted to the Arcanum Training Institute for Marvellers. She meets with a lot of prejudice against Conjurors, among both the students and instructors, but she makes some true friends as well. Marvellers each have a paragon; touch, vision, spirit, sound or taste. Many of the children already know which of the paragons they have but many, including Ella, will find out at the end of their first year at the institute which paragon they have. Many years ago some Marvellers set up The Aces and didn't use their powers wisely with one of them, Gia, being imprisoned. She eventually manages to craft a version of herself and escapes from the prison. This leads to a great deal of consternation and speculation and, more importantly, plenty of adventures for Ella and her friends, Brigit and Jason. The Marvellers is marketed as young adult fiction but I'm sure this series will be read and enjoyed by all age groups. I can't wait for the next one.
