A great story aimed at teens and young adults, those who are interested in fantasy and magic may be interested in this almost female version of Harry Potter, with 11-year old Ella Durand as the protagonist. It is also the story of a child trying to fit in, which is a much more relatable aspect of childhood and growing up, and even adult life, so this may resonate with young readers who can also enjoy the fantasy and escapist aspects of the novel too. The writing is fast paced and descriptive, and it promises to be an exciting series for readers of all ages if the first novel is anything to go by. It teaches important lessons about trust, true friendships, coming of age and trying to fit in when you are different from everyone else. Loyalty, independence and honesty are also explored by the author, and the characters she has created seem real and authentic, so this series could run for a long time to come as the characters' adventures continue.
