Although I struggled with the first chapter (there seemed to be a lot of unexplained words and world information) as soon as I got to the second I was hooked. And I read 200 pages in one go.

I thought the character of Ella was a great one, as she struggles with her new position and wanting to make friends and fit in. Finding other misfits helps her in her new place at the Arcanum Training Institute. That she isn’t aware of how people like her are viewed, is heartbreaking. As she feels like she’s done wrong, even though it’s often other peoples prejudice. Which is a great theme for a MG/YA novel.

The story itself has some great points and turns, and I think it’s a great first book in a potentially brilliant series. Fans of Nevermoor would enjoy this one I think.

The cover is striking, and there are some awesome illustrations in the book.

Thank you Readers First for my copy.
