Once this book stopped trying to be HP (letter of choosing, secret access point, hidden school) it actually became quite enjoyable. I loved the characters and really felt for Ella as she was isolated but eventually made friends. The art for the tree is so beautiful I wish more scenes were illustrated by the same artist as they would improve the view of the world and add depth to the story.
The plot was impressively set up and the world building felt sound.
I enjoyed the way the different magic systems and skills were woven into the friendships Ella builds as well as the firm family connection with the family tree and contact through friends. The main focus of the evil in the books was interesting especially with the cards and the Aces including what happened ot Ella's family. The paragons sound interesting and have more of a focus than the average school house.
I can't wait to read book 2.
