The Marvellers by Dhonielle Clayton is the first book in a series with 11 year old Ella Durand who joins the Arcanum Training Institute for Marvelous and Uncanny Endeavours as the first Conjuror attendee. The Institute is a magic school in the sky where Ella makes friends and enemies along the way.
With hints of Harry Potter and Hogwarts the story clearly and cleverly interweaves boarding school life, magic, marvels, fantasy and paragons with great facts. I loved the spice elixirs from around the world section (Spices and Deathbulls). I also liked the references to New Orleans where Ella is from. Having been there myself a few years ago during Halloween it too is magical, mystical and enchanting.
What imaginative wonders our young people today get to enjoy through modern literature and what amazing and creative writing by the author. I can’t wait for the second book, and surely by the cover, the screen animation…
